Monumenta is an art exhibit in Leipzig, Germany, running from 1 September to 13 October 2018. We at IMRSV Arts were commissioned to produce an installation combining technology and art in one of the exhibition's spaces.

The graphics you see here were designed by @susavetter and @humanfractal, a designer-engineer duo based in Berlin. These graphics were projected onto the four walls in the installation room, and sensors in the space triggered audio and visual effects when visitors reached out and touched the walls.

This website was created by Jesse Pinho, a software artist based in Berlin, as an attempt at creating a new way to document an art exhibit. While most art exhibits are preserved via photos and videos, we decided to try a different approach. During certain events in the course of the exhibition, every time a visitor to the exhibition space touches a wall and triggers the audio-visual effects, they also trigger a signal that is sent to a web server. The web server records when they start and stop touching the wall.

The result is what you see here. If the graphics you see on the screen are slowly fading between colors, you are seeing what would be projected on the walls of the exhibition space when no visitors are touching the walls. However, as soon as a visitor touches the walls, you will see a flickering effect on the animation, indicating activity in the space. The flickering will stop as soon as the visitor moves away from the wall. Thus, wherever you are in the world, you are connected with the humans in Leipzig experiencing the exhibition in person.
